America Reads Program

America Reads is a federal initiative that sponsors college students to serve as reading tutors for at-risk children in the local community. The goal is to have every child read on grade level by the end of the third grade. Saint Peter’s America Reads tutors serve at least two hours a week at local grammar schools, working individually with children in reading and language arts under the supervision of a teacher.

Students eligible for federal work-study may also use their award to earn their work study funds by tutoring 5-10 hours per week at a participating school.

The America Reads Program is open to all Saint Peter’s students in good academic and disciplinary standing with a minimum 2.5 GPA. After filling out the application, students attend are interviewed and an email announcement will notify each candidate of whether they have been accepted to the program.  Then the tutors attend a required orientation at SPC and one at the school whisch you have been assigned. In addition, tutors also attend a monthly meeting to report on their experience and to get further trained to be a successful tutor.
