Development resources

Saint Peter's College encourages and supports the ongoing professional development of its faculty. The College provides opportunities for members of the faculty in all stages of their careers to pursue research and curricular interests that enhance disciplinary expertise and teaching quality and to share their work with colleagues.Programs currently available include:

1. FACULTY DEVELOPMENT AWARDS

Faculty Fellowships: Assist faculty in the study and research requisite for their professional development. These fellowships are available for one academic year at half salary, or one semester at full salary.

Rev. George Kenny, S.J., Fund Fellowships: Assist faculty to begin or continue, during the summer, research requisite for their professional development.These fellowships provide a summer stipend and limited funding for travel and equipment directly related to the research.

Faculty Research Associates: Assist faculty to begin or continue research projects that do not require the time available on a Faculty Fellowship. Two Research Associate awards ordinarily are available annually. Research Associates receive one course release each semester for one AY and additional funds for research.

Faculty Teaching Associates: Assist faculty to prepare paired or interdisciplinary electives. Two Teaching Associate awards ordinarily are available annually. Each Teaching Associate receives one course release for one AY and additional funds for research.

Doctoral Fellowships: Assist faculty to complete doctoral studies. One Doctoral Fellowship ordinarily is available annually. Doctoral Fellows receive one course release each semester for two academic years and six credits adjunct compensation for one summer.

2. FUNDS FOR ACADEMIC PROJECTS

Funds for Research: Cover such expenses as preparation and mailing of questionnaires, technical assistance at approved rates, supplies, and page charges for recognized journals.

Funds for Travel to do Research: Cover 50% of transportation costs to approved research sites.

Funds for Faculty Attendance at Workshops and Short Courses: Cover 50% of registration or tuition costs.

Funds to Travel to Professional Meetings: Cover costs of attending professional conferences for those on the program or officers of the sponsoring organization.

3. SEMINARS

Ambassadors' Program: Encourages faculty to participate in an interdisciplinary seminar that emphasizes international themes. The Program is built around the visits of United Nations Ambassadors.

Durant Seminar: Conducted by the holder of the Will and Ariel Durant Chair in the Humanities, who determines the topic. The Seminar is open to faculty in all disciplines.

4. WORKSHOPS

Faculty Development Programs: Several events organized by the Academic Dean and shorter workshops during the AY sponsored by the Committee on the Professional Development of the Faculty. Their formats vary, but their goals are always to enrich teaching.

New Faculty Orientation: Each year in August a two-day orientation program is offered to those members of the full-time faculty who are new to Saint Peter's College. The program includes a comprehensive introduction to the traditions, practices, policies, facilities, and services of the College.

5. TEACHING PROJECTS

Partners in Learning: Pairs faculty and student volunteers from different departments, usually for one semester, in a process to review teaching styles.

Critical Thinking and Collaborative Learning: Used by faculty trained in these methods who act as consultants for colleagues.

6. RESOURCES

The Center for Teaching Resources: Affords access to a variety of materials and equipment intended to support faculty in their course work and in their professional development. An advanced computer system with multimedia capabilities, a laser disk player and a laser printer are available. All faculty are encouraged to use this equipment to prepare or to preview materials for thier courses.Office of Faculty

Research and Sponsored Programs: Assists faculty in identifying, writing, and processing applications for external funding for academic projects. The Office also maintains a library of current periodicals on teaching, publishes a newsletter every other month, and circulates a calendar of faculty development activities.

7. NETWORKS

Faculty Resource Network: Organized by 30 colleges and New York University. Saint Peter's is a founding member of the Network, which sponsors summer seminars and semester-long programs for faculty development. The College sponsors an annual campus colloquium highlighting the experiences of participants.

New Jersey Faculty Development Network: Resource for New Jersey institutions of higher education. It publishes a newsletter, conducts research on collegiate teaching, and sponsors a number of faculty development programs.
