Description: and the Merriam-Webster Thesaurus. Easiest to use of the online dictionaries, the Collegiate also provides the date a term was first used. The Collegiate and the American Heritage dictionaries concentrate on American usage.
New Dictionary of Cultural Literacy
Description: 3rd ed., by E. D. Hirsch, Jr., Joseph F. Kett, James Trefil, this work is based on an assumption that certain concepts, words, and works should be a part of every American's cultural knowledge. Exactly what should be included in this conception of literacy is controversial, but the dictionary can be a useful reference if you want to test your knowledge of important pieces of Western culture. There are 6,900 entries divided into 23 topical sections (e.g., The Bible Mythology and Folklore, Proverbs, Idioms World Literature, Philosophy, and Religion Literature in English, History, Politics, business, Sciences and Mathematics, Medicine and Health).
