The Fine Arts Department offers the following programs:

Requirements for Art History Major

Degree of Bachelor of Arts

In addition to fulfilling the core curriculum requirements (60 credits), Art History majors must complete the following courses:

Ar214 Art, Advertising and Design 6 credits
   and Ar202 Art: Public Issues  
   or Ar211-212 Renaissance Art, I and II  
Ar215 Medieval Art 3 credits
Ar321-322 History of Sculpture and Architecture, I and II 6 credits
   or Ar331-332 History of Painting, I and II  
Ar335-336 Art Appreciation (Aesthetics), I and II 6 credits
   or Ar355 The Nude in Art  
   and Ar356 Gods and Athletes in Greek and Roman Art  
Ar340 The Visual Arts in America 3 credits
Ar Fine Arts Electives 12 credits

Special Note on Core Curriculum Requirements

Art History majors must complete Ar127 Introduction to the Visual Arts to satisfy the core curriculum Fine Arts requirement.

Requirements for Fine Arts Major

Degree of Bachelor of Arts

In addition to fulfilling the core curriculum requirements, Fine Arts majors must complete the following courses: 

Ar127 Introduction to the Visual Arts 3 credits
   or Ar128 Introduction to Music  
  Art History Electives 9 credits
  Visual Arts Workshop-Studio Electives 9 credits
  Music Electives 9 credits
  Fine Arts Electives 6 credits
  Electives 24 credits
     SUBTOTAL 60 credits

Special Note on Core Curriculum Requirements

Fine Arts majors must complete both Ar127 Introduction to the Visual Arts and Ar128 Introduction to Music. One will satisfy the core curriculum Fine Arts requirement and one will apply to the major.

Requirements for Visual Arts Major

Degree of Bachelor of Arts

In addition to fulfilling the core curriculum requirements (60 credits), Visual Arts majors must complete the following courses:

Visual Arts workshop-Studio Electives 21 credits
Art History Upper-level (Ar200 or higher) Electives 9 credits
Fine Arts Electives 6 credits
Electives 24 credits
   SUBTOTAL 60 credits

Special Note on Core Curriculum Requirements

Visual Arts majors must complete Ar127 Introduction to the Visual Arts to satisfy the core curriculum Fine Arts requirement.

Graphic Arts Major

Degree of Bachelor of Arts

The Graphic Arts Major and the Graphic Arts major with a Photography Concentration both require 36 credits (12 three-credit course) as allocated below. Because of the variety of possible career objectives, students considering such majors should consult with their departmental advisor to determine which courses they might take in addition to the major required courses.

In addition to the core curriculum requirements (60 credits), Graphic Arts Majors must complete the following courses:

8 major required courses 24 credits
4 major elective courses 12 credits
8 free elective courses 24 credits
   SUBTOTAL 60 credits

Graphic arts majors with a Photography Concentration must, in addition to the core curriculum requirements, complete the following courses:

9 major required courses 27 credits
3 major elective courses 9 credits
8 free elective courses 24 credits

Minor Program

The Fine Arts Department offers minor programs in three areas: Music, Visual Arts, and Art History. Substitutions for particular required courses may be made with departmental approval.

Music Minor

To minor in Music, a student must take a total of 18 credits: Ar128 (3 crs) plus 15 credits of electives in music. 

Visual Arts Minor

To minor in Visual Arts, a student must take a total of 18 credits:

Ar160 Drawing and Composition Workshop 6 credits
   and Ar171 Live Model figure Drawing Workshop  
   or Ar166 Sculpture Workshop  
   and Ar170 Creative Sculputure Workshop
