Community Service & Service Learning
OFFICE MISSION
The Saint Peter's College Office for Community Service and Service Learning upholds and promotes the Jesuit ideal of educating students to be "Men and Women for Others." We strive to provide opportunities for our students which allow them to come to know both themselves and the world we live in more fully. Through participation in meaningful and potentially life-changing volunteer experiences, the Community Service Office prepares students for a lifetime of learning, leadership and service, while cultivating an awareness and appreciation for diversity not only while being a student of Saint Peter's College but as an alumnus as well.
SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES
Through the Office for Community Service, students have a wide array of volunteer opportunities available to them. Annually, more than 700 students volunteer on 50 or more projects at 30 different sites in Hudson County. The results are astounding. During the past year, Saint Peter’s students contributed more than 16,000 hours of service and raised over $8,000 for various charitable causes.
Students have the option of individually committing to at least 5 hours a week tutoring in local schools through our America Reads Program, or at least 2 hours weekly in any number of local agencies with our Loyola Volunteer Program. In conjunction with student clubs and organizations, the Community Service Office allows for students to participate in events through our Monthly Service Calendar. The Service Learning Program exists through a partnership with the Academic Affairs division which allows faculty members to include community service experiences into select courses. The program has students working at least two hours a week at local schools or social service agencies as part of their course requirements, allowing them to get "real life" experience in a way that helps others.

ANNUAL COAT DRIVE, BLANKET & MEN’S CLOTHING DRIVE
ALL MONTH LONG
DROP OFF: COMMUNITY SERVICE OFFICE DINNEEN 127
New and lightly used men and women’s coats will be accepted by our partner in this endeavor, Jersey Cares. Also, we will be looking for new and lightly used blankets, to help keep the homeless members of our community warm during the winter nights. The main drop off site will be outside the Community Service Office in Dinneen Hall 127.
Men’s Clothing is also being collected throughout the month. The following items are particularly needed to keep our homeless friends on the streets warm through our Midnight Run program: Men’s long sleeve t-shirts, sweaters/sweatshirts, pants (bigger sizes appreciated), socks, underwear, thermal underwear, hats, scarves and shoes.
New and/or kindly used, clean blankets are being collected for our friends living on the streets of Manhattan and Jersey City, NJ. The winter months are coming and some of the homeless men and women rather stay on the streets where they consider its safer than in a shelter. Please help them be as warm as possible on the upcoming cold, winter nights!
